The United States and Canada are wealthy countries, yet many people in our nations live in poverty. Scripture makes our response clear: “You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor” (Dt 15:11). Jesuit ministries accompany people on the economic margins through homeless shelters, food kitchens, and education and job training.
Many government policies restrict access to necessary public assistance, punishing our most vulnerable citizens, especially children. The Jesuit network advocates for the protection of funding for crucial economic assistance programs and for the implementation of stronger anti-poverty measures.
